This update was written Monday, April 20, 3:00 p.m.:
It's time for new Lessons! Step 5 and Project 8 are now up! Let me know if you find any link issues etc.
Read the following completely and carefully:
A. It's clear that some students aren't watching all the videos. Please don't skip any steps. It only hurts you.
Reminders:
B. During EVERY class time on Mondays and Wednesdays, you should come to this page (COS Classes Spring 2020), read the update, Zoom times, and follow any and all instructions.
B. Reminder: As part of your grade, EVERY Wednesday, there will be a Mandatory Check-In. During this time, you should log into the "Hinds' Zoom Help Room". Be prepared to give a report on what step or project you are currently working on and where you are at. This will be so I can ensure that you are not getting too far behind.
C. Check the section below for all my scheduled Zoom events/ for the week. These are open to either class.
D. This week, I am adding an additional hour of "Hinds' Zoom Help Room" on Friday from 11:00 a.m.-Noon, just to give another time for help.

Recommendations for purchasing a Snare Drum Kit
Please contact me with any questions or links you would like me to look at.
*** Reminder #1: Your child can learn the snare without buying one- just use the practice pad.
*** Reminder #2: Your child needs to pass the snare test on #41 before they can play snare drum in band class.
Warning #1: I do NOT recommend the small (piccolo) snare drums. The standard size we are looking for is 14" X 5.5".
Warning #2: Beware of getting a stand that is intended to be played seated. In band, snares are always played while standing. Most cheap sets have a tiny stand that doesn't work for us.
Warning #3: I strongly recommend a rolling case, or case with cart. It's a bigger deal than you think.
There are several good options like CB, Ludwig, Vic Firth, and Yamaha. However, my favorite snare starter kit is the Pearl SK910C Educational Bell Kit with rolling cart. They are a good price and quality, have a good sound, and comes with a rolling cart. Sometimes they are available locally like Guitar Center (which should match the lowest price you find online). If you are ordering online, you can google them by clicking the blue name above and see the many sites that carry it. Locally, Guitar Center sells it, but may have to order it for you.

My suggestions for band instruments (purchase)
Snare drum
There are several good options. However, my favorite snare drum starter kit is the Pearl SK-900C Snare Drum Kit with Rolling Cart. The drum is good quality, has a good sound, and it comes with a rolling cart, which can be very helpful. This kit is available at a variety of locations online, as well as through local stores like Guitar Center. If you are ordering online, you can google it and see the many sites that carry it. Locally, Guitar Center sells it, but may have to order it for you. Make sure you get the one that says SK-900 with a "C" on the end- that means it has the rolling cart.

Here is the background for Louie, Louie. At 1:07, that is 2 measures before the trumpet solo begins.
